Partially for personal reasons, as our small team sometimes needs to concentrate on work and family issues. Partially for practical reasons, as news on academic events and publications is shared much quicker through social media. A decision has now been made by the Order of Freemasons under the Grand East of the Netherlands to move its historical archive, library and museum collection from a building in the Jan Evertstraat to its new headquarters in the Javastraat in the same city. This brings an end to years of discussion and controversy about a new home for this important collection of masonic heritage.
Meanwhile, the CMC collection is participating in various digitalisation projects of the National Library in the Netherlands, which means more of the collection will be accessible online in the near future.Stichting OVNhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08649256681374619956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068510914324808328.post-58563693914338855722015-03-19T11:11:00.005+01:002015-03-19T11:12:34.225+01:0014th International Symposium on the History of the Spanish FreemasonryThe CEHME (Center for Historical Studies of the Spanish Freemasonry) International Symposium on the History of the Spanish Freemasonry is taking place in the north of Spain, in Gijón, September 10-12, 2015. OVN- board member dr. Jan Snoek (University of Heidelberg) and dr. Henrik Bogdan (University of Gothenburg) have been working together for several years on a major project for Brill Academic Publishers: The Handbook of Freemasonry. This pioneering reference work includes contributions from leading scholars in the academic field of study, The first section covers historical perspectives, such as the origins and early history of the Order. The second deals with the relationship between freemasonry and religious traditions, while the third covers organisational themes, such as ritual practice. The fourth section deals with issues related to society and politics - women, blacks, colonialism, nationalism, and war. The fifth and final section adresses the subject of freemasonry's relationship with culture and the arts.
This group seeks to reflect and further stimulate the current process — reflected in the recent creation of new teaching programs, international associations, journals, book series, and reference works — of professionalization and scholarly recognition of Western esotericism as a new area of research in the study of religion. For more information on the field, see the websites of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE, http://www.esswe.org), the Association for the Study of Esotericism (ASE, http://www.aseweb.org), and the Center for the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam (http://amsterdamhermetica.nl).

For the necxt meeting of the AAR in San Diego 2014, the Western esotericism group invites paper proposals on the following topics:

• Lived esotericism: In the last fifteen years the concept of "lived religion" has gained attention from scholars and has been at the basis of a growing number of researches and publications. The Group would like to explore the possibility to apply this concept to the study of Western esotericism. Western esotericism has often been studied by focusing on texts and doctrines, more rarely on the actual experiences of esotericists trying to translate those texts and doctrines into lived, daily practice. The predominant approach based on intellectual history has perhaps led to an idealized, partial image of the social and cultural dimensions of Western esotericism. Please note that proposals should not focus necessarily on contemporary Western esotericism. Proposals on earlier periods will also be welcome.

• Esotericism and imaginative narratives: Possible topics include but are not limited to mystical or initiatory rites presented as fiction, novels that deal extensively with the transmission of esoteric knowledge, and esotericism in popular culture and film. As always, the Group seeks papers from as wide a range of historical periods as possible.

• Transformative and performative aspects of gender in esoteric practices (for a possible joint session with the Queer Studies in Religion Group)

• Western esotericism and African American culture: There is in recent years a growing interest in the study of Western esotericism in the context of African American culture. The Group welcomes proposals on this topic (for a possible joint session with the Afro-American Religious History Group).

• Western esotericism and ritual studies: We are interested in receiving proposals that focus on the way in which esoteric rituals can be related to nature, the environment, or ecological concerns (for a possible joint session with the Ritual Studies Group)

Please look for further information on how to submit directly in the AAR website (https://www.aarweb.org/annual-meeting/call-for-papers).The deadline for the submission of proposals is Monday, 3 March 2014.Stichting OVNhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08649256681374619956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068510914324808328.post-88914737867049593802014-02-10T11:48:00.001+01:002014-02-12T14:09:16.313+01:00New Board Member OVN

Bringing together scholars who are experts on the visual arts, music, sound and literature from all over the world, the Network's events will explore what the visual, material and performing arts can tell us about the relationships between Theosophy, modernity and mysticism c. 1875-1960. The research carried out by the Network’s partners will examine where and how artists, writers and performers came into contact with Theosophy and other mystical practices, and how Theosophical ideas, especially those of key figures in the Society in this period, such as Helena Blavatsky and Annie Besant, were given material, visual and audible form and shape. One of her main conclusions states that although Surrealism was 'influenced' by western esotercism, it didn't mean that artists like André Breton were 'followers' of a particular current. According to Bauduin they did take an interest in esoteric ideas, but only used certain concepts and practises as a way to tap into the creative subconscious and create works of art.
- Anaïs Maes defended her dissertation La franc-maçonnerie et la construction d'indentités nationales en Belgique (long XIXe siècle) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on 9 May 2012. The dissertation looks at the relation between freemasonry and nationalism. How did freemasons react to the rise of nationalistic sentiment at the beginning of the 19th century and the creation of the Belgian state? Maes looked for answers in the documents which got into Russian hands after WWII and stayed there for more than half a century. For a balanced answer she studied both masonic and non masonic sources from these archives.
To our great regret the OVN has learned of the passing of professor Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke (1953-2012). He was the directeur of the Exeter Centre for the Study of Esotericism (Universiteit van Exeter). Goodrick-Clarke made important contributions to the field of study, such as his research into the relation between western esotericism and fascism. The field of study is mourning a prominent scholar and beloved teacher. A beautiful in memoriam by fellow researcher Christopher Mcintosh can be found on the website van de European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE), of which Goodrick-Clarke was a member.
- Louis Trebuchet has launched a website, which allows researchers to upload and download digitalised sources and literature on masonic study: Masoniclib. The project aims to make as many e-books and digitalised documents as possible available for researchers (provided they are free from copyrights). The site can be searched on title, author or publication. It is also possible to place a request for a particular rare document to be uploaded.

- Simon Burrows and Mark Curran are involved in the online project The French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe. This database contains all the books produced by bookseller and publisher Société Typographique de Neuchatel (STN), in the period 1769-1794. The website is an important source for bibliographical, historical and literary study, and is now freely available. The collection contains several works that are connected with freemasonry and historical figures such as Cagliostro.

The book Dinners and Diners. Where and How to Dine in London from lieutenant-colonel Newnham-Davis (1899) can be read online on the website of The Dictionary of Victorian London. The chapter dedicated to the diners in Freemasons' Tavern gives a nice image of the period, and lists a menu of the diner that was served here.Stichting OVNhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08649256681374619956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068510914324808328.post-42016658622544077472012-02-06T14:30:00.000+01:002013-01-14T22:34:51.503+01:00New publications- Several scholarly articles on freemasonry can be found as downloads on the French website www.revues.org (search term: franc maconnerie). [Thanks to Andrew Prescott for the suggestion!]
